Santos, Mt Eden: DNS

So, we thought the fairest thing to do was to try the Santos fettuccine first. That way we know what our baseline is.

Just after 1, Gareth and I walk in and grab a menu. No mention of fettuccine. We take seats. When the waiter turns up we ask, "do you still do fettuccine?" "No, not anymore," he says.

Gareth and Walter win - already! :)

Failure!

Before the challenge even began victory is declared in the hands of Gareth and Walter! See below for commentary:

[12:58:59 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: are there rules about what we can drink as part of our tasting
[1:00:50 p.m.] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: umm
[1:01:10 p.m.] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: up to you i guess .. but you ahve to put thatin your blog
[1:01:12 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: we need to standardise the accomapnying drink
[1:01:18 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: Only Gimblet Gravels Syrahs or Central Otago Pinot Noirs
[1:01:25 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: hang on
[1:01:34 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: this fettacine can have any sauce right?
[1:01:37 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: yup
[1:02:03 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: so I propose the following rule:
if the sauce is tomato pased then the house red must accompnay
[1:02:17 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: if the sauce is creamy then the house white must accompany
[1:02:23 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: but you can't tell that till you order
[1:02:34 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: or did you mean "based" or "paste"?
[1:02:44 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: based
[1:02:54 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: ok
[1:02:57 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: house red - yuck
[1:03:02 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: (often)
[1:03:50 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: true but we need some sort of standard
[1:04:22 p.m.] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: nono, has to be carbonara
[1:04:34 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: woah, you just changed the rules
[1:04:36 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: does that have mushrooms?
[1:04:45 p.m.] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: yeah it does
[1:05:02 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: so are we looking for a better fettucine or a better marinara?
[1:05:09 p.m.] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: sorry, i just assumed it was a fettuccine carbonara
[1:05:21 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: sorry meant cabonara
[1:05:23 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbonara
[1:05:41 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: Carbonara needn't be fettucine
[1:05:50 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: and fettucine ussually isn't carbonara
[1:06:09 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: i'm not finding a need for mushrooms here
[1:06:21 p.m.] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: gk: that is true .... i just assumed ...
[1:06:26 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: I don't like mushrooms
[1:06:31 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: me either
[1:06:35 p.m.] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: oh ..
[1:06:42 p.m.] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: ok this could bedifficult
[1:06:52 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1928,157181-246199,00.html
[1:06:56 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: hmm
[1:07:00 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: but J already accepted the challenge as it is stated on the blogs
[1:07:13 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: ie. a better fettucine of any description
[1:07:19 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: well, so we already know we won't like the fettuccine @ santos - gareth and walter FTW!
[1:07:23 p.m.] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: i guess there is no clarification on what fettuccine meant ...
[1:07:32 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: [13:07:17] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: i guess there is no clarification on what fettuccine meant ...

is a style of pasta
[1:07:36 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: fettucine is a form of ribbon like pasta
[1:07:40 p.m.] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: true ture
[1:07:41 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: man, i hope you don't write specs
[1:07:45 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: there is not room for error there
[1:08:03 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: Walter even linked to it on wikipedia yesterday
[1:08:09 p.m.] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: but when people say spaghetti, it's most probably a blognase .. i guess i just assumed
[1:08:11 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: (i rule)
[1:08:17 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: [13:08:03] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: but when people say spaghetti, it's most probably a blognase .. i guess i just assumed

BOLLOCKS
[1:08:28 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: [1:08:02 p.m.] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: but when people say spaghetti, it's most probably a blognase .. i guess i just assumed

thats what i would expect of a house music listener
[1:08:30 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: that's why you say "bolognaise" after it
[1:08:41 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: [13:08:22] Gareth Karl says: [1:08:02 p.m.] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: but when people say spaghetti, it's most probably a blognase .. i guess i just assumed

thats what i would expect of a house music listener

FLAWLESS VICTORY to G
[1:08:44 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: meaning "how they do it in Bologne"
[1:09:18 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: because there is not really italian food - but many regional foods in italy (or something like that - i read that in Cuisine once)
[1:09:27 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: :)
[1:09:29 p.m.] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: maybe i just have it so often i just assumed that fetta is a contraction for fettaccine carbonara
[1:09:36 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: fetta == knob cheese
[1:09:38 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: fettUccine
[1:09:43 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: fettuccine == a kind of pasta
[1:09:52 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: [13:09:30] Walter Rumsby says: fetta == knob cheese

aka smeg
[1:09:56 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: feta = style of cheese best made from goat's milk
[1:10:09 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: [13:09:50] Gareth Karl says: feta = style of cheese best made from goat's milk

but far too often made with cow's milk
[1:10:19 p.m.] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: fetta is a short name for it. like maccas is short for macdonalds, and not macdo's
[1:10:34 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: macca is an international cricketer with diabetes
[1:10:55 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: [13:10:13] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: fetta is a short name for it. like maccas is short for macdonalds, and not macdo's

macas is australian, which highlights the low level of intelligence in australia since it's

McDonalds - not Mac
[1:11:29 p.m.] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: macdos is quite funny though
[1:11:40 p.m.] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: sorry, MCdoes
[1:11:40 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: macdo's is what the french call it
[1:11:47 p.m.] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: lol wtf?
[1:11:52 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: j, your knowledge of:

1. cuisine
2. how to spell the names of "family restaraunts"

doesn't bode well - you won't impress the ladies tih this
[1:12:03 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: McDs (pronounced Mc Dees)
[1:12:34 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: tih this -> like this
[1:12:36 p.m.] Jerrold Poh (at work) says: it's enough to put the gypsy lover off guard =)
[1:13:19 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: 29,998 tracks played on last.fm
[1:13:54 p.m.] Walter Rumsby says: we should go and order knob cheese with mushrooms now g
[1:15:01 p.m.] Gareth Karl says: true

Challenge Accepted

Bring it on!

The Plan

Our friend Jerrold reckons that Santos in Mount Eden does the best fettuccine in Auckland, New Zealand.

We're out to prove him wrong, one cafe / restaurant at a time.
